Jacqueline Natla, the fallen Atlantean god is now Amanda’s prisoner and the two have formed the most irritating of alliances in order to put a halt to our planned family reunion. But unfortunately for us, she’s dug up some help. I’d be inclined to patronizingly say ‘That’s cute darling, good luck with that dear’. Amanda Evert is still trying to thwart Lara and be the first to find Avalon. And all three have had some major work done. It isn’t long before we’re reunited with not one, not two but three enemies from our past. Lara Croft continues her search for her long-lost mother, exploring ancient Norse tombs at the bottom of the Mediterranean or buried beneath Hindu temples in Thailand. Tomb Raider Underworld was released in 2008 and served as the final act in Crystal’s trilogy, wrapping up the plot which began in Legend. But to my pleasant surprise, Underworld delivered and while I wouldn’t call it the definitive Tomb Raider experience, it came, for me anyway, a lot closer to it than its two predecessors. There’s no doubting Lara’s place as a veteran in the video-game world but I feared the old girl may have been running out of steam. Twelve years (at the time of Underworld’s release) and 8 commercially successful titles, not to mention an abundance of periphery titles and medias puts the franchise squarely in the heavyweight category of an industry where longevity is hard to come by. The series has seen dizzying heights and regrettable lows. The fact that the Tomb Raider series made it to Underworld is impressive. My biggest hope for this game was that the developers had learned from previous mistakes in Legend and Anniversary. I’ve already expressed how I feel about the previous two installments in Crystal Dynamics’ trilogy so needless to say I was not nearly as excited for this game as I had been for previous titles. Ohk Eshiva! You will like, read, reblog, follow, etc… It’s time for the sixth in my series of Tomb Raider reviews and this time I’ll be looking at the most recent installment in the franchise Tomb Raider: Underworld.
